On September 23rd the Sun enters Libra gracing us all with enhanced access to harmony, balance, and diplomacy. Libra, like yoga, helps us to balance pairs of opposites. She begins her reign at the spring equinox (or autumn equinox in the northern hemisphere), which is the perfect balance between summer and winter, day and night and light and shadow. This reconciling of pairs of opposites aims to create balance and healing.
This is a time to choose practices that physically and energetically realign the body. Look to develop an awareness of the right and left sides of the body, with an emphasis on always coming back to centre. As we bring balance to the body, so the mind too becomes calmer and more harmonious.
Cultivate balance and strength by blending both Yin and Yang yoga. Begin with meditation, followed by a dynamic sequence to build strength and then include some slower quieter postures working deeper into the joints and connective tissue. Follow this with Nadi Shodhana pranayama (alternate nostril breathing) to restore your energetic balance, and make sure to leave plenty of time for Savasana and total relaxation.
